Apart from the strong cultural heritage and great history, North Sumatra also has some of the quality beaches in Indonesia. In general, Medan is not really the best tourist destination if you are searching for pristine white sand beaches and islands. However, due to its strategic location and the availability of airports and seaports, it becomes a suitable stepping stone to various weekend getaway places like the island of Penang in Malaysia, Brastagi and the very beautiful Lake Toba. There are no beaches for swimming in Medan but large swimming pools are available for people who want to relax and chill out, especially during scorching summer months.

Perhaps, the nearest beach you can visit in Medan is the Cermin Beach, located in Serdang Bedagai, which is 45 kilometers from Medan. Although not too long, Cermin Beach has a clean and clear white sand beach, on the east of Sumatra, facing Malacca Strait. Currently, access to Cermin Beach is quite good with road condition wide and smoothly cemented, making the entire trip comfortable. Beginning from Simpang 3 Perbaungan, you can enjoy sightseeing along the way with the scenery full of cacao and palm tree plantations.

Today, the Cermin coast has transformed into an ideal tourist attraction, known both locally and abroad. Each day, more and more tourists visit the various attractions in Cermin beach district. One popular spot is the Water Themepark, which has combined artificial swimming areas such as pools besides the beach. It is also the biggest and the only water recreational infrastructure outside Java. In this park, different water sports can be tried as well as other outdoor recreational facilities.

In general, Cermin Beach offers extensive facilities including a camping area, souvenir stalls and shops, parking area, entertainment stage and relaxing cabins. Besides the themepark, a hotel resort and restaurants have been constructed in the area for visitors who want to stay for several days.

Another ideal spot for swimming in Medan is the beautiful Lake Toba. Known as the pride of Medan, Lake Toba is both a lake and supervolcano. It is the biggest lake in Indonesia as well as the biggest volcanic lake in the world. The scenic site of this lake is a famous destination of tourists during holidays. To access Lake Toba, you can travel by bus (cost $2) or rent a taxi or car which cost around $45 -100.

Swimming in Lake Toba is one of the most amazing experiences. While the water is quite chilly, it will be fine once you dip in. Vegetation surrounding the lake is lush and green. While there are no precautions, just be careful as the rocks are slippery when you walk. Don’t forget that Lake Toba is the deepest lake in the world although most hotels have made their own swimming zones to create safe areas for swimming, particularly for kids.

If you want to go swimming in Medan but hesitate to travel far from the city center, you can visit Medan’s public swimming pool or kolam renang. Situated at Jalan Sisingamangaraja, the pool was built since 1939 by Dutch architect Han Groenewegen and experienced renovations in 1970s. The entrance ticket cost Rp6,000 with available lockers to keep valuable stuffs. There are only few visitors during weekdays but it gets crowded during weekends.

While Sumatra is not as popular as Thailand or Bali when it comes to massage, it still has some significant influence in the local culture. In rural places, most masseuses usually charge lower rates compared to those offering their services in big cities. If you are searching for spa and massage in Medan that offers ‘true spa facilities’, you often find them in hotels in the city center.

The most popular choice is the Quan Spa, situated on the 17th floor of JW Marriott Hotel. The term ‘Quan’ is a Chinese term that literally means ‘a source of pure water’ and the spa uses the invigorating properties of water while providing an oasis of renewal and restoration. Derived from a language full of symbolism, ‘Quan’ also means ‘everything that is good and pure’ – quite promising words to represent the spa seeking the path of well-being.

As the first spa established in Indonesia, it is an impeccable place offering guests a great experience of well-being and relaxation. Water and nature, local ingredients are used to rejuvenate both body and soul.

When it comes to food, Medan has an astonishing variety of dishes. Hence, even people with extremely sensitive stomachs that can’t take exotic local cuisines need not worry as there are lots of restaurants around the city serving more familiar international favorites. Actually, most restaurants and cafés have their individual food and beverage menus that have a wide array of international cuisines, from Western to Asian dishes, so you don’t have to look far in search for something delectable when eating and drinking in Medan.

Surprisingly, more than 10% of Medan’s population belongs to the Chinese race, higher than the average national percentage of 4%. As such, don’t be surprised to hear a bit of Hokkien combined with Bahasa Indonesia. The Chinese influence in Medan is not only reflected on the language but also in their traditional cuisine with readily available choices like hokkien mee, tiongsim mie and duck noodles. Other popular choices include Tau Kua Heci made from prawns, tofu, crabs and soup, Sate Padang and Putu Bambu.

In Jalan Kumango, you can visit Hock Seng Hokkien Mie that serves noodles with stewed pork slices, prawn cake, fish balls, and small oysters. On the same road is Bihon Bebek Kumango, which serves duck vermicelli at Rp 38,000 per bowl, the priciest breakfast in town but often visited by plenty of locals and tourists.

For Sundanese food, Koki Sunda serves delicious Sundanese food and beverages like Es Delima and Nasi Liwet. For authentic Chinese cuisine, visit Selat Panjang, Semarang Streets and Sumatera Streets where some of the oldest restaurants in Medan are located. If you prefer halal, you can ask for a no-pork version of the dish. You can also visit Kampung Keiling or Little India where most Indian restaurants are found such as Pagaruyung Alley and Cahaya Baru Indian Restaurant. Other interesting eating places include Blue Apple Frozen Yoghurt , Roland’s German Restaurant, Gelato Bar, Obonk Steak Restaurant and Apek’s Coffee House.

The best part when eating and drinking in Medan is that alcoholic beverages are cheap and the food is passable. When it comes to Medan’s nightlife, it offers as much entertainment like other cities in Indonesia. There are plenty of pubs, lounges and nightclubs in the city center. An entertainment complex, Capital Building, is one popular hangout place during evening located near the Post office at Jalan Putri Hijau. The city is also full of karaoke bars; amongst popular choices include K2-Karaoke Keluarga, Jet Plane KTV, Equator KTV & Pub and Tropicana KTV. Another well-known spot for expats and elite class is the Entrance, Karaoke and Bistro located at the ground floor at Grand Aston Hotel. For classy bars and lounge, you can check out Cava Lounge, Vintage Wine Shop at Grand Angkasa Hotel Lobby, Shoot Pool Bar and Lounge, The Tavern and the Medan Club.

If you want an al fresco, hawker-style place for eating and drinking in Medan, the ever-famous Kesawan Square and Merdeka Walk are the best choices. With the complex of cafeteria, café and restaurants, both are known as the hottest spots among the youth, ideal for dining and chatting with friends.

Located right at the heart of the Medan City, Titi Gantung is one of the historical landmarks of Medan. It is a suitable hangout place during nighttime as you get to see a horizontal view of Medan, the crowded Merdeka Walk and the park while waiting for the train to pass, reminiscing about the nostalgia of Medan’s past. The historical value of this bridge can be dated back to 1885 when it was built by the railway company Spoorweg Maatschappij during the Dutch colonial era.

Located near the Medan railway station, Titi Gantung means ‘bridge over the railway’. It is between the commercial district around Merdeka Square, Kesawan, Hotel de Boer and De Javasche Bank with crowded residential communities in Jawa Street. It is considered to be one of the most significant structures in Medan along with Tirtanadi Water Tower and the Medan City Hall. It was originally built as a road and pedestrian foot traffic, railway passengers and even tourists, visitors and spectators for various activities like the ‘night market’ in Merdeka Square.

With its sturdy construction, equipped with winding beautiful ornaments, it became a popular place for people crossing with bicycle or by foot while observing the train station. In addition to the solid wall made from thick iron and the unique appearance when viewed from Jalan Penang, it has a height of 7 – 8 meters from the base of the road and a width of 40 – 50 meters. The right side of the bridge is made of tiered way or stairs while on the other side is a continuous asphalt road. On the other hand, the bottom part of the bridge has two gates with road that connects to Jalan Veteran and Jalan Penang.

For many years, its existence gradually experienced new phases of development, being a book haven place in Medan. Today, the bookstalls have been transferred to Merdeka Square, which is a much better location and more comfortable to the eyes than the once overcrowded condition in the bridge. However, several booksellers remain faithful to Titi Gantung. Later in the process, it was redeveloped again, and it is now currently structured and polished by the local government, intended as part of a major recreational place in the city. Actually, as of today, the project completed the design and construction durability phase. Titi Gantung and four other areas including Taman Ahmad Yani, Elizabeth Regions Hospital, Regions Petisah Pagaruyung and Center for Food will be proclaimed as the new icon of Medan.

In fact, the Mayor of Medan Rahudman Harahap revealed the plan of opening the bridge for 24 hours, transforming it as the center of accessory sales and culinary of Medan. With this plan called Pemko Medan, souvenirs and other local handicrafts will be displayed from morning until evening. Then, from night until morning, culinary merchandise and other distinct local food products will be sold.

Titi Gantung belongs to the 39 buildings of Regional Regulation No. 9 of 1988, which is related to the Building and Environmental Preservation of historically valuable Architectural Antiquities in Medan City. With its distinct Dutch architecture, this historical structure is indeed one of the many Medan structures one should not miss.

Built in 1896, the Tirtanadi Water Tower is not an ordinary structure in Medan. It is known as Medan’s true icon, standing tall in the middle of the Medan traffic, along the intersection of Sisingamangaraja Street and Pandu Street. The Water tower of Tirtanadi is not only the city’s landmark but is very useful in draining water to every corner of Medan city.

Known as a legacy of the Dutch colonization, the water tank was completed in the year 1908 with Building no. 3D-036. It was previously called the Water Tower in the Pandu Street but later on became known as the Tirtanadi Water Tower. It is located right at the crossroads of Sisingamangaraja Street, Cirebon Street, Hi Ani Idrus Street and Pandu Street. The Tirtanadi Water Tank has been part of the Tirtanadi Regional Water Company under the label of NV Water Leiding Maatschappij Ajer Beresih, with headquarters in Amsterdam, Netherlands and established on September 1905. When the North Sumatra Bill No. 11 of 1979 was enacted, the company was permitted to use another name; hence, it is called the Regional Water Company Tirtanadi.

Until today, the century-old water reservoir still looks well. With the increasing water demand in Medan, it can no longer serve every resident in the city, however. Trapped by tall buildings, one could not view the water tower from afar due to congestion. The Tirtanadi Water Tower has been designed to contain a reservoir of water and assist in maintaining water pressure in Medan’s water system. It can hold sufficient water to maintain constant force for the water’s mains and serves as a buffer supply when the demand goes up. For more than a century, it has been used to hold the city’s backup supply of water and is capable of providing water even during pump failure or power outage. It is also used as a backup water supply to make sure that even small areas can have water even for a day.

Similar to the ancient water towers seen in Europe, its unique design reflects a neo-renaissance style of architecture, influenced by the Dutch architectural style that is usually seen in many ancient Medan buildings. Aside from being a city icon, it is one of the significant landmarks showing authentic Dutch architecture including old City Hall, the Central Post Office and Titi Gantung.

Nowadays, Medan is already an ever-growing metropolis and a progressive town in Sumatra Island. While several contemporary buildings have already been constructed, this ancient structural icon still stands along the street of Sisingamangaraja. Often referred to as the Eiffel Tower of Medan, the base of water tower is made of strong bricks and the reservoir is supported by durable, thick steel trusses.

Most ancient water towers around the world have tended to decline and deteriorate. The Tirtanadi Water Tower is now a landmark and has become a protected monument that often has other functions. It is also one of the most interesting structures in Medan and is commonly visited by almost all tourists and visitors in the city. Access to the water tower is very easy as it is next to the main street in Medan.

Medan was recognized before for its sheer distinction between the Chinese, Malay, native Batak and Indian groups. Ironically, one of the city’s most important areas, Little India, locally known as Kampung Keiling, has transformed to become a model of racial harmony between the Chinese groups and the once predominant Tamil community. One of the most prominent parts of Kampung Keiling is the Shri Mariamman temple, which is the only Hindu temple of any significance in Medan dedicated to the Hindu goddess Mariamman.

Based on the account of one local elder, Kampung Keiling was originally called Patisah, then changed to Kampung Madras to signify the South Indian origin of the people living in its 10-hectare land. But due to the dark skin of the South Indians, the name keiling, which is a slang word for darker skin, became more popular. The highlight of the Little India is the presence of Shri Mariamman temple, which today has turned one of Medan’s top tourist attractions. What makes this area unique is that during the time when Indonesia was experiencing many communal conflicts, this place has remained a harmonious and peaceful place for its residence despite racial, religious and economic diversity.

Built in 1888, the Shri Mariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Medan, constructed in the same year the Maimun Palace was built. The architectural design of the temple is similar to the ones seen in Singapore. It shows a usual architecture influenced by the Indian culture. The entrance tower or gopuram is green in color with an image of two angels carrying a huge flower necklace. On both sides are elephant statues that symbolize sacred animals of Hindu belief.

Going inside, you won’t miss the magnificent pole and floor made of marble, covered with green carpet. Several light decorations are also attached. The temple is divided into three main halls. Inside, you will notice a wooden pole standing above the rectangular cement. The temple is also filled with statues of the Hindu deities such as Ganesha, Shiva, Goddess Kali, Dewi and Vishnu.

The main praying hall is painted with colorful flowers on top of the pillars. The green carpets are used by the devotees for prayer before they move closer to the front to do another prayer. Adornments of lotus are common inside, and these are commonly found in Chinese temples. With the Shri Mariamman altar at the center, you can see plenty of devotees praying to her. Mariamman is the Hindu goddess of rain and disease and is believed to be the highly regarded deity in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. On the right side stands the altar of Shri Murugan, the Hindu deity of war and the patron of Tamil Land. The altar of Shri Vinayagar, commonly known as Ganesha, is placed on the left side: he is said to be the Lord of Obstacles and is the most worshipped among the Hindu pantheon.

Shri Mariamman Temple is very easy to locate, since it is situated right at the heart of Medan. Plenty of public transportations like becak, taxis and other public transports pass through this location. To be specific, it is located at Jalan Teuku Umar No. 18. Take note that the temple only opens twice a day, during 5.30 am to 12 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm.

Situated in Jalan Balai Kota, Medan, Merdeka Walk is known as the hottest spot in town. With its huge name plastered at the entrance gate, you can see crowds of people dining, strolling or just lurking at this lively place. This place is an ideal hang out outdoor spot under the bright colorful light adorned on huge trees.

Open from late afternoon until midnight, it is where most happenings in Medan take place with the cafés, restaurants, exhibitions, live entertainment and numerous stalls selling stuff. Apparently, it is the first tensile structure in Indonesia, inspired from the alfresco outdoor dining concept you can see in Singapore. While a look at it is enough to tell anyone that it could be developed into a Vegas-type place, casino and gambling is strongly prohibited in the city.

Merdeka Walk is just 5 minutes away from Kesawan Square. You can easily find this spot as it is beside Lapangan Merdeka and just opposite of the popular Grand Aston Hotel, both popular Medan landmarks. Or, better ride a becak as almost all Medan drivers recognize this place. Historically, this was the place where the Independence of Republic of Indonesia was officially proclaimed on August 27, 1945. As such, this place turned out to be one of the most important historic places in Medan.

As part of the Merdeka Park, Merdeka Walk is basically the sidewalk surrounding the huge park. Upon entrance, you will notice the big old trees surrounding the park. A true cozy place at the heart of the city, you can enjoy the big playground, which is often used for large city events. There is also a monument as well as a long hangout place filled with chairs and tables. Walking along the big old tress, it is a nice and comfortable place to relax your body and mind. You can also sit around and watch different people and the vehicles passing by.

When it comes to food, the place has plenty to offer. While it is not ideally a place for a proper (date-type) dinner, it is ideal for snacking, drinking, hangout and chatting with friends. There are various cafes and restaurants offering different varieties of food. You can see several international food franchises like Pizza Hut and McDonalds and food stalls serving local dishes and traditional Indonesian foods like Nelayan Seafood and The Dimsum Restaurant. Other international cuisines are also offered such as Western foods, Sundanese food, Japanese bento, and Chinese foods. Other small food carts serve BBQ foods, bread, coffee, burger, noodles and other snacks. Not only does the food look and taste good but everything is also relatively cheap.

Merdeka Walk is not only limited as a place for food trips or hangout. With its wide area and numerous shop selections, you can visit a book market on one side and on another side, a game center. Several historical buildings can be seen inside that remain intact and unscathed despite old age, boasting unique ancient architectures from colonial times. It is quite a picturesque sight and one to enjoy when eating out in this place. Another great thing is that the entire Merdeka square provide free wireless Internet connection, hence you can see plenty of people bringing their laptops here.
